what we do
what we do

"Amber has consistently offered and provided excellent opportunities for both the homeless and offenders. Many young people owe their current levels of stability and employment to this project and due to the unique nature of the objectives pursued at Amber the ethos has inspired chaotic young people to take personal responsibility for thir lives. HMP Exeter regards Amber as a pivotal part of it's re-offending strategy"

-
Andrew Bovey, Accommodation Advisor, HMP Exeter

Amber’s centres, Ashley Court and Bythesea Lodge, provide a temporary home to young people (Amberteers) who want to work towards achieving a better future. Almost all who come to us are unemployed and homeless and many have a history of substance misuse or have been involved in crime.

Amber provides 24 hour care and support and whilst the atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, our programme is carefully structured. It provides young people with a challenging and engaging step-by-step rebuilding process designed to help them overcome each of the obstacles that have previously stood between them and independent living.

Learning becomes relevant, interesting and fun. Accredited training courses are taught in a practical way, whether it is adult literacy and numeracy or tenancy and housing related issues. Broader, transferable skills are developed in our Personal Development and Team Work and Leadership courses that involve personal fitness and a wide range of outdoor activities.

The opportunities at Amber are virtually endless. Art, crafts, music, drama, sport and cooking are all very popular Amber pastimes. A few days on our narrow boat, the Mary Rose, provides experience in boat handling and conservation work and then there’s the sense of achievement and value gained with the number of projects we undertake in the local community and further afield.
