I started at Amber after coming of heroin. I found it hard at first, especially if I was having a bad day, but being able to recognise I was having a bad day and being able to say to the staff how I felt was a great breakthrough. After a while the bad days got less and I was having more good ones. My 30th birthday was definitely a good one. It was the cleanest birthday I had had for years and I even had a chocolate cake made for me, which was really nice.
As I worked my way through the programme I was given extra responsibilities such as looking after the kitchen, which made me feel good about myself and helped me see that I was moving forward in my recovery.
Amber helped me realise that, in time, I wanted to get back to working with horses so with their help I joined a riding school and went to a college taster day where I found an equine course I really liked. I filled in the application, got an interview and I got on the course. I worked really hard to improve my riding and save up for the kit I needed for the course and when I achieved ‘resident of the month’ Amber helped me reach my target.
I am now two years clean and nearly finished a two year equine course. I have my own flat and am really enjoying my drug free life and all that Amber has helped me achieve.
